Blessing of a commemorative plaque of the Baptism of Father Andre Coindre

On Sunday 28 February, 2010, on the occasion of the 223 anniversary of the Baptism of André Coindre, (28th February 1778) a commemorative a plaque was unveiled and blessed in the parish Church of St. Nizier in Lyon.

The ceremony took place in the presence of Brother José Ignacio Carmona Ollo, superior general, and numerous Brothers of the Sacred Heart and Religious of Jesus and Mary. During the brief ceremony Brother Jesús Ortigosa reminded the assemble guests and faithful that Father André had spared no effort so as to be ‘salt of the earth and light of the world,’ which had been his motto since his days in the major seminary, and that he used all his energies to respond with courage and trust to the needs of his times and surroundings on behalf of young abandoned and de-Christianized young people. Rev. Hugues Jeanson, assistant priest of the parish then proceeded to bless the plaque.

It was Brother Marius Drevet from the Province of France who had initiated the idea of such a plaque, and Brother Jesús Ortigosa did all the necessary background work in order to bring the idea to fruition.

There are now two plaques in the church baptistery, one in honor of St. ClaudineThévenet and just below it, the one in honor of Father Andre Coindre. The two plaques call to mind the baptism of these two people from Lyon who through their close and prophetic collaboration strove to meet the needs of the young people of their era.
